Postdoc positition

Postdoctoral position in Remote Sensing and Pattern Recognition at IGN - Paris

Title: Road detection and characterization in mountainous forested
areas using 3D lidar point clouds

A post doc is available in the MATIS lab at IGN in Paris, France

The MATIS laboratory of the Institut Géographique National (IGN),
which is the French Mapping Agency, is specialised in photogrammetric
computer vision, image analysis and remote sensing both from
geospatial imagery of and ground based imagery.

The position is supported by the FORESEE project (Forest Resource
Estimation for Energy) of the ANR (French national research agency).
This project integrates most of the institutes and research teams
working on forest management in France. It aims at an automatic and
robust estimation of the forest resource in France, its evolution, and
the localization of the reachable areas for intelligent harvesting,
especially in mountainous areas.

The goal of the position is to detect, geometrically characterize
(width, slope, curvature etc.), and qualify the road network in
mountainous forested areas. Main network as well as pathways should be
detected, as well reversal and parking areas. Due to the high
vegetation cover, 3D lidar data will be used.

The candidate should have a PhD degree in photogrammetry, remote
sensing, image processing or computer vision, with knowledge and
interest in pattern recognition. The position will be for 1.5 year and
may start on September 2011.

Applications should be sent to:

Clement Mallet & Nicolas Paparoditis (mailto:,, including a
cover letter and a resume.

Deadline: 22/04/2011
